In a recent re-read of I’ll Take My Stand, I was reminded that many people have filled their lives, and subsequently their families with things that are destructive to their culture and lives. Consider for a moment the question, “What is on your mantle?”. The mantle, or in some cases book shelves contain various curiosities that are deemed worthy of public display. When the items on the mantle are bric-a-brac from other cultures or expensive trinkets that have no connection with your family, you may want to rethink what is there. When the items displayed have no connection with the family or your culture, they create a sense of alienation.
We often forget that the items we surround ourselves with often mold and shape our views, emotions and thoughts. I have seen families that have pictures of places they have never been displayed prominently in their home. Alongside are items and trinkets that have no connection to their family or its members. The trinkets and pictures look nice, but they do little to uplift the spirits or remind your family of who they are or where they came from.
