In responding to the outcry over the Thetford Chicken Massacre, the organization, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has labeled the event “redneck”. It is not known if PETA was making a crude joke at the expense of Southrons and our heritage or if this was another episode of using the ‘redneck’ label to make it look bad. The association of ‘redneck’ with cruel acts is uncalled for. This is another example of how some groups are creating confusion in responding to cultural ridicule. Had the group PETA used “racial”, sexual or gender based labels to describe such barbaric behavior there might have been a lounder outcry. Imagine if they had labelled the actions as “bloodthirsty sodomite behavior”. There would be an outcry. Instead they label it ‘redneck’ and further ridicule the South.
