Corpus Christi shames veterans

As Confederate History Month came to a close, there was a commotion in Corpus Christi over flags placed to mark the graves of Confederate veterans in the Old Bayview Cemetery. The news station Kiii, channel 3 in Corpus Christi covered the story. They focused on the reactions from a nearby church whose members expressed dislike for the flags. (Once again, the persons selected for on-camera comments were ill informed of the noble reputation of blacks and Hispanics who served in the Confederacy. The same old mantra of racism was touted in front of the public. No one mentioned the 37th Texas Cavalry or prominent blacks and Hispanics who served in the war. No mention was made that a large number of Confederate sailors were black. Just the same old mantra of how bad the South was and how insensitive people are).

The residents forget that the it was the Yankees who wanted to level Corpus Christi during the war. It was only the action of the Confederate garrison led by Hobby that prevented the destruction of their community. They forget the brave action of those soldiers. They forget that when the Yankee navy bombarded cities, that cannon balls do not discriminate who they kill. They do not realize that the destruction would have effected all who lived in the city. No word was mentioned by the news or the interviewees of these matters. Texans of the 19th century knew. They were grateful for the courage shown by those men. They elected Hobby and John Ireland to serve as Governors after the war. They were a grateful generation, unlike the current generation of Corpus Christi residents near the old Bayview cemetery. Sadly, the flags were removed, by the city of Corpus Christi, causing shame on top of ignorance. For a city whose economy is very dependent on the military, the conduct of how they treated the veterans in this matter is shameful.

Free Texas from ignorace!
