Some preliminary thoughts on the primaries.

In my initial assessment of the election results, several things emerge. Bear in mind that I am not a political scientist and do not claim to be one.

1. Larry Kilgore, who was openly supportive of States Rights managed garnering about 20% of the vote across Texas. This suggests that there is a substantial number of people who are willing to support a States Rights candidate and platform.

2. This election managed to capture the attention and emotions of many Texas voters. More Texans voted in this primary than voted in the 2006 elections for governor. The people are excited about something. Although I was disappointed overall, the number of voters was encouraging.

3. The political machines are still alive and well. The existence of the machines makes it difficult for independents to make headway in Texas. By machines, I am referring to the election judge and delegate convention proceedures. The people who control the committees control the party platform. The little man may bring their proposed amendments, platform planks, etc., yet if those items are not in step with the party, it is unlikely anything will happen.

4. There will be run-off elections in some areas of the State. In my CONgressional district (CD-22) there will be a run-off. The strong States Rights candidates did not make, which disappointed me. It seems that people are still wanting to vote their pocket books and some conservative values as long as those values are not “too conservative”. I still have issues with the drawing of the districts. It boggles my mind how anyone could think that one person could represent the varied values and interests of this district. The communities of Sugarland, Webster, Kemah, Pasadena, La Porte, and Missouri City are very different from one another. The economies, demographics and interests of these areas are divergent if not openly opposite each other in many ways. The democrats complain about the Republican drawn lines , whereas, it used to be the Republicans complained about the democratic drawn lines for this district. Whichever party carries the district, it is doubtful that one person could accurately represent the views of the people. I seriously do not think that the people in this district gave Nick Lampson permission to ban light bulbs, send millions of their dollars to Kosovo, or set aside monies to educate children of other nations before they took care of the education of our own. The present CONgress critter is running with an agenda associated more with party loyalty than the needs of the people he was sent to the imperial city to represent.

Free Texas!
