25 November 1835 marks the birthday of the Texas Navy. The accomplishments of the Texas Navy are something we should all be proud of. Their activity in the Gulf of Mexico prevented invasion by sea of our Republic. They also helped Texas gain admission to the table of nations. The admission of Texas to the table of nations was also helped by the French.
It irks me when so called ‘real Americans’ badmouth the French. Without French help, the American revolution would have fizzled out. The French were also the first European nation to welcome Texas as a nation. Many badmouth the French just because the French do not support the imperialistic designs of Leviathan. That very nation they badmouth is the one that kept the young Republic of Texas protected from Mexican invasion during the Pastry War. Although President Houston accepts the glory for keeping it safe, the reality was it was the French fleet and army that kept Santa Anna at bay while the young Republic of Texas took its first steps. It was also President Houston that vetoed the claims the Republic of Texas made on Cozumel Island. Free Texas! Reclaim Cozumel!
25 November 1863 marks the date of the Battle of Missionary Ridge. This is one battle that showed the true stuff that Texians are made of. In that battle, when other units were breaking and running, Cleburne’s Texas Brigade held. They fought back two Yankee attacks on their position along Missionary Ridge (or Tunnel Hill). The remarkable thing is that they had no ammunition during those attacks. They halted and pushed back those two assaults with ROCKS. The courage of such men is astounding. I am also amazed at the precision that their throws must have been. Would that the children of today could throw rocks like the men of Cleburne’s Texas Brigade. The story of these men is a modern David and Goliath. These brave men from Texas held when others ran and in holding, stood firm to their colors and had the resolve and tenacity to use whatever resources they had available. They were not going to be defeated, and it is only the preservation of the Almighty that allowed them to survive the attacks that day. When men in the right stand their ground, trust their God, and use their wits, the enemy cannot resist. During this time of giving thanks, the bravery of these men deserve thanks.
For something that will stir your blood and remind you of the sacrifice they made, watch this video I am their flag . The speaker is H. K. Edgerton. If you have not had the opportunity to meet him, you have missed a blessing.
As Texians, 25 November is a date that we can be proud of. As Texians we need to be proud of our ancestors and express thankfulness for them. They did it for us. The least we can do is remember them and their brave acts.
